The Weirdest & Craziest Ammo Out There

The Weirdest & Craziest Ammo Out ThereTrending: Best Places to Buy Ammo Online and [Buyer's Guide] 7 Best AR-15s We talk a lot about guns around here, but guns are of course only half of the “pew pew” equation. Guns are great, but they’re only really as good as the ammo. Now, if you’re here, you probably already know all about the differences between cast bullets, hollow points, FMJS, and such. The ammunition basics , if you will. Of course, there’s so much more to ammo than just what you can easily find on the shelf at your local sporting goods store. Much more. Today, we’re gonna talk about some of the wilder and crazier ammo types that are out there, the types of things you have to special order and pay extra hazmat shipping charges on. Don’t worry though… it’s worth it. Oh boy, is it worth it. Exotic ammo? Fireballs? Yes, please! Note: It should go without saying but I’m going to say it anyway–check your local, state, and federal laws regarding any of these ammo types before you purchase, and in the case of the incendiary ones, take extreme care when shooting around flammable materials such as dry grass or other foliage. Very Special Shotgun Ammo Shotguns are the gateway drug of the exotic ammo world. They open up a whole host of opportunities to use interesting ammo that you just don’t get the chance to use with rifle ammo. Here are some of our favorites! Dragon’s Breath If you’ve heard of any of the specialty ammo on this list, you’ve heard of dragon’s breath rounds . These are shotgun rounds, usually 12 gauge, that lets loose a stream of fire about 30 yards long when you pull the trigger. This fireball burns at around 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit and is sometimes used to kick off controlled burns, but mostly it’s just used to make one great big cone of fire come out of your shotgun barrel. Dragon’s Breath Ammo Dragon’s breath rounds (also called flamethrower and “firewall” rounds, depending on where you buy them) are loaded with lots of little magnesium balls that ignite shortly after leaving the barrel to create a brief, but brilliantly bright and incredibly hot gout of fire that can do serious damage if you aren’t careful. Definitely keep this one on sand and dirt, maybe out in the desert or an empty field somewhere unless you’re actively trying to burn something down. And I would say that using it indoors, such as for home defense, is going to be just as bad for you as it would be for an intruder. Also keep in mind that while dragon’s breath is mostly safe for your barrel, it is horrendously dirty. One dragon’s breath round will foul your barrel about the same amount as shooting an entire box of cheap target birdshot. Flares If you’re looking for something that’s a little more “Oooh, ahhh” than “OH GOD,” flare rounds might be a good option. These rounds work just like normal signaling flares and are available in a variety of colors. While flare rounds are still a fire hazard, they are much safer than dragon’s breath rounds in that respect, and they’re not nearly as likely to start a brushfire (though you should still be very careful with them). These flares work great as emergency signaling devices out in remote areas and are perfect for backcountry hunters and those who live a little off the grid, but still want to be found by emergency services should the need arise. Also, they’re just darn fun. You can turn your shotgun into a miniature multi-colored fireworks mortar for relatively cheap… they’re still $5 or so a pop though, so pick your moment carefully. Bolo Rounds Based on the ancient bolo hunting tool, bolo rounds (also called chain shot, ball and chain rounds, or “Macho Gaucho” rounds) consist of two steel ball bearings connected by a length of steel cable. The result is a very different round from most out there. You have two fairly mobile ball bearings attached to each other by a cable that’s dangerous in its own right at the speeds it’ll obtain when fired from a shotgun. Unfortunately, accuracy is abysmal and performance is… questionable. I don’t know how effective these things would actually be in a self-defense situation, but I doubt they’d do better than a regular slug would, and they’ll certainly be less accurate. Picking them up just for fun to plink at an old box or to try and shred a can? That I can see being worth the cost of admission. Flechette Rounds Flechettes are tiny steel darts that first saw heavy use in the heavy jungle environments of Vietnam. Imagine a shotgun that fires hardened nails rather than buckshot, and you’ll be in the right ballpark. At close ranges, flechette rounds can put a cluster of steel darts through dense foliage, soft body armor, and even thin sheet metal. It goes without saying that anyone getting hit with these is going to have a tremendously bad day. For practical self-defense purposes, you’re probably still better off with 00 buck, but this is one of the few rounds on this list that I can see being a realistic option for serious defensive use. For the cost and the only marginal effectiveness at range, I’d just as soon have buckshot though. Especially since “Why is this home invader full of steel darts?” isn’t a question I really want to be asked by law enforcement. The steel nature of the darts and their mild armor-piercing capabilities also mean you’re unlikely to make friends with police officers who know you have these things, and they’re outright illegal in several states precisely because of the danger they pose to officers wearing kevlar. All in all, I’d call them a fun novelty to bring out when you want to cause a little destruction at the range, rather than something you should rely on for home defense. If that’s all you have on hand though, it’ll certainly get the job done. Rifle Ammo To Impress Your Buddies Not a shotgun kind of person? No worries! There’s still plenty of fun you can have with your rifle. Here are a few weird ammo options for the rifle-shooting readers out there. Tracers Tracer rounds are just plain cool. Expensive, but cool. They have a magnesium tip that ignites chemical compounds, usually strontium-based, that are applied to the end of the bullet. This burning compound causes the round to light up and be much more visible than a normal bullet. Tracer Rounds Tracer rounds are primarily used by the military, who use them for shot marking and target acquisition. One soldier lays down fire on a target or position, and suddenly their entire squad has a bright red line showing them exactly where to shoot. Pretty handy in a sustained gunfight. They can also be used by machine gunners to make sure they’re suppressing close enough to a target, and in some cases can be loaded close to the end of a soldier’s magazine to give them a very visible indicator when they’re about to hear a click instead of a bang. There are three different types of tracer rounds: bright, subdued, and dim. Bright ones are, as the name implies, the most visible version and is probably the best for civilian use as most civilians are going to be using them for fun at the range, rather than serious defensive purposes. Tracers make it incredibly easy to see just where your rounds are going–but they make it easy to see where they’re coming from, too. Dim tracers are almost entirely for use with night vision optics, and subdued tracers have a delaying effect built into the tip that causes the bullet to ignite one hundred yards or more from the barrel. This makes it harder for enemies to follow the tracer path back to its source. Most modern tracer ammo has at least some delay effect like this. Like the flares and dragon’s breath rounds, tracers are incendiary (with some exceptions we’ll get to in a minute), so be careful about using them around dry foliage or in windy conditions. Non-Incendiary Tracers Modern science and the desire to shoot laser beams like a Star Wars character have given us the non-incendiary tracer, called Streak Visual Ammo . "Streak Visual Ammo" uses a non-burning phosphor compound painted onto the back of the bullet to give the shooter a tracer-like effect, without the risk of torching anything nearby. They produce no heat or flame and are therefore perfectly legal most places that tracers are banned, though you should still check your applicable laws. They give more of a laser beam effect than the mini fireworks show you get with tracers, and they look like a lot of fun for night shooting. They’re also available in a variety of colors, and at $12 for a box of $20, they aren’t half bad on price either, at least not for specialty or novelty ammo. .50 Cal Armor Piercing Incendiary If you’ve got a .50 cal already, you’ve already got something that’s going to make your range buddies more than a little jealous. But if you want to be a little more extra about it, get some fancy ammo to go with it. Armor piercing? Nah, that’s old hat. Incendiary? That guy a few lanes down has incendiary rounds. Armor piercing and incendiary rounds that combine the best of both worlds? Now we’re getting somewhere. Armor-piercing incendiary rounds–for when you absolutely want to F things up. If you’ve ever wanted to punch a flaming hole into an engine block, this is the round for you. It should go without saying that you should be extremely careful not only of your target, but everything behind it for several miles when you use this. Armor piercing incendiary rounds also somewhere above the tracers but below the dragon’s breath rounds on the fire hazard scale. On the scale of pure fun though, they’re off the charts. Other Cool Stuff You Didn’t Know You Wanted Of course, we civilians have limited access to the really cool ammo. First, tank ammo is so very like our standard centerfire ammo, but also incredibly different. Take a look at how HEAT rounds, or High-Explosive, Anti-Tank rounds work. Cutaway view of a HEAT round The primer, when ignited, kicks off the propellant charge that drives the round forward towards the target. And no matter how far away that target is, penetration is the same.  That’s because the effect of this round is based on the shaped charge in the nose, rather than the pure kinetic force of a solid sabot or depleted uranium round. These anti-armor rounds explode on impact, and send a directed explosion through hostile armor to utterly destroy anything on the other side, and do considerable damage to the vehicle (or building) itself. All in all, much cooler than anything any of us can get our hands on. To Sum It All Up… There are some really interesting specialty rounds out there, some fun, some terrifying. If you choose to buy any of these, you’ll probably find something fun to do with them at the range–just be safe. Very few of the “off the wall” ammo varieties out there are terribly practical, especially for civilians, but some of them sure are a blast at the range. Which of these specialty rounds is your favorite? Want to see more ammo reviews ? We’ve got ’em! Want more odd stuff? 4 Weird Tactical Things On Amazon (that aren’t all that bad).

The 4 Best .22lr Scopes – Reviews of .22 Rimfire Rifle Optics Photo by Mitch Barrie / CC BY The .22lr is one of the most popular and beloved rounds ever made for public use. Why? Because its bullets are cheap, its accuracy pretty decent, and it’s a great beginner’s tool for youngsters to learn how to shoot (no recoil, etc.). A .22 rimfire has an array of uses. It can be taken along for target practice on one hand, while on the other hand, it can be used for wiping out small varmints and even hunting small game. However, in matching the brilliant performance of a .22 rifle and using it to its full potential, the rifle demands to be accompanied with an equally well-made scope. So what makes the best .22lr scope ?  The best .22lr scopes for your rifle should have just a 1” tube and be nitrogen-purged and O-ring sealed.  Your rifle scope should also have an objective lens larger than 32mm.  Since the .22lr rounds out of a rifle have low recoil, great scopes can be had for little money.  (We go into more detail regarding these criteria in the conclusion.) If you browse the market, you can find a number of options for lenses, varying from optics for plinkers to optics for competitive championships. 1. The 5 Best Holographic Sights for AR15 — AR 15 Optics Review 2020 Photo by / CC BY The AR 15 platform is a very versatile rifle that is capable of being anything from a long-range marksman’s rifle to a close quarters battle implement. When running the AR 15 as a CQB weapon the best optic is a holographic--a red dot optic. A good holographic optic is designed to allow shooters to put rounds on target as fast as possible and to make engaging moving targets faster. A holographic optic should be much faster to use than iron sights. Holographic optics should allow the shooter to engage up to at least a hundred yards. These optics should be lightweight, easy to mount, and easy to use. A holographic optic’s reticle should be easy on the eye, but easy for the eye to pick up. Here are the 4 best holographic sights for AR15 : Ohuhu Reflex Sight -85 The Ohuhu reflex sight is a tubeless holographic optic designed for intermediate caliber rifles like the AR 15. Once mounted the optic is designed to put rounds on target as rapidly as possible. The Ohuhu allows the shooter to easily engage moving targets at close and intermediate ranges. This sight is compact but presents the shooter with a 33 mm window. The sight is capable of using 4 different reticles, and either red or green for each reticle. These reticles range from a single, simplistic red dot, to a crosshair, a circle and dot, and a circle with a dot in the center, and stadia on all 4 sides. The AR 15 is one of the most versatile weapons in the world, and there is no reason your optic cannot be versatile. The Ohuhu reflex sight is built on a standard base for mounting on any standard flattop AR 15 receiver. The optic has unlimited eye relief and can be mounted nearly anywhere on the rifle forward of the shooter. The optic is extremely lightweight and adds almost no bulk to your rifle. The optic is waterproof and shockproof, capable of being a highly effective home defense optic. This is one of the best holographic sights for AR15 if you’re on a budget. Survival Gear Review: Yeti Coolers

Survival Gear Review: Yeti Coolers

Owning a Yeti cooler is a rite of passage in the South.  Am I kidding or what?  Nope.  Kids down here ask for Yeti coolers for Christmas for heaven’s sake.  The Robinson power family of Duck Commander fame is the poster children of this campaign.  Countless celebrities have jumped on the bandwagon, too, so how can we resist not owning one?  Of course, for us practical minded, cost conscious tightwads, we have to ask the performance questions and if there is really a value in such an expensive piece of gear as prepping equipment.  Let’s look into this whole issue and examine the pros and cons of owning the No.1 name in ice coolers.  Is it really practical and useful for survival situations Quick Navigation Food Containment During a SHTF Event Becoming Yetified Think Possibilities The Hype The Proof Stays Frozen Honest Downsides? Conclusion "Food Containment During" a SHTF Event One of the more perplexing issues to solve during a SHTF Bug Out scenario is the reality of having, using, and relying upon perishable food(s), even just one cooler full on the way out the door in route to our remote rural escape hideout.  Think with me that this small amount could be just a stop-gap ration until we get settled in and established at the Bug Out camp. Don’t backlash me on this one, because I know the easiest way out of this issue is to go dry foods, freeze-dried packs, and maybe canned goods.  But there may be other scenarios when a quick grab cooler or two could be a very feasible option.  Heaven knows we have no idea what the SHTF might be.  Let’s think positive that we planned ahead and the Bug Out cabin, tent or trailer is already pre-stocked with a good food and water supply to last for months.  Maybe the power grid is still up, or it is off or on.  Could be we have a small petrol generator to power a deep freeze for a few hours a day.  It could happen this way.  If not, then our prepping needs to be planned for a much wider and deeper set of situations. See Price on Amazon Last update on 2020-08-14 at 03:28 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API Becoming Yetified Sure, I know no ice box cooler of any known construction is going to keep something frozen or fresh forever.  Forever is a really long time.  My orientation here is more along the line of thinking about a week at the far end.  Something in a cooler to sustain us until we get onto our dry stock or harvest some local game or fish is not a fruitless idea in my opinion.  I’m not selling this as a long term solution, but just a short one.  However, a really good ice cooler would be useful later for keeping fresh game/fish cooler, especially if the box is placed in a cold stream, or a hole dug into an earthen bank under shade.  You should certainly ponder and plan for multiple options. Think Possibilities So, what are we talking about here?  You’re at work when the call comes across national news.  Maybe it’s a weekend and you’re in the middle of painting the house.  Who knows the conditions or how long we have to execute our escape plan or button down for a Bug In.  The essential bags are in the garage packed and ready to go…for the most part.  We’re busy grabbing last minute items, maybe filling a couple more boxes with canned stuff, rice and beans from the pantry. Throw in some extra clothes and make sure the meds are in a bag to go.  Get the AR and mags out of the safe, and put the 1911s in holsters.  Throw in another case of bottled water. We break out the Yeti and rummage the freezer.  What do we take?  I guess that is a matter of personal tastes, but ground burger comes to mind.  It can be stacked and takes up less space/volume in a cooler.  A big roast does not fit well, etc.  Maybe take some smoked sausage in one-inch tubes? Fill the top with ice, and if smart have a second cooler(s) of some kind to fill to the top with just ice, if practical.  You have to play with these contingencies to see what works.  Is your bug out vehicle big enough for a last minute haul?  Remember this is a short term affair, but how long? The Hype If you’re fully involved in prepping now, then you are in the process of acquiring all kinds of stuff, survival gear, packs, med kits, camping gear, specialty clothing, boots, guns, ammo, optics, blades, shelters, tote bags, boxes, whatever, etc.  Undoubtedly you have bought items that turned out to be junk.  Maybe you were side slapped silly by an advertisement in a related magazine or off the shelf at a reliable outdoors store. You might as well get used to this as it is the reality of gear being made today.  Be sure to rely on our Survival Cache site for gear reviews.  Shop our store to find items that have been tried and tested.  So, here you are in the big box store looking at a stack of Yeti coolers.  You came in because Jim Shockey said on his hunting show this was the best cooler ever.  If you believed him saying the Yeti company line of “Wildly stronger, keep ice longer” then just maybe you were sucked in.  Despite him being paid big bucks to say so, is this “plastic” box of medium size #45 really worth $350 ? Just for SC fellowship information here the standard pricing for Yeti coolers is #35 for $300 , #45 for $350 , #65 for No products found. and #75 for $450 . Other models, sizes and shapes are available along with all kinds of accessories and colors.  I will offer a piece of practical advice I was given about big coolers.  If you fill a #65 Yeti with just ice for example, it will take two people to pick it up to put it in the back of a car, pickup, or boat.  Trust me on this one. The "Proof Stays Frozen" So, studying further on the Yeti cooler in particular, the web site mentions that their cooler “keeps ice for days.”  Hmmm.  There is really no statement about how many days they had in mind.  Like any cooler, long term ice retention is based on a number of factors as you can well imagine.  Still, the Yeti is supposed to be the (one of) best.  Well, is it?  Well, yes.  It certainly exceeded my expectations.  I’m still testing it during the full summer heat, but in the fall and southern “winters” it will keep anything cold for five or more days.  Keep it in the shade and open it minimal times to stretch it out.  The sealing gasket is the real secret to this product.  Keep the lid locked down and tight. JC from here in Mississippi is as avid a prepper/survivalist as I know of locally.  His comments about his two Yeti’s were, “My Yeti coolers will keep ice for 7-10 days when the outside temperature runs around 80 degrees.  When it gets hotter, as it does during the summer months up to 98 degrees, the Yeti will keep ice for 5-7 days in my experience with their use.”  This seems a reliable time frame for keeping ice and food for a short term period. Also on the Yeti web site at is a whole list of tips for maximizing ice retention for the Yeti cooler’s full performance.  Most of it is common sense, but if you buy one, heed this advice.  They mention using dry ice, too, but that is likely out of the picture when it comes to a hasty SHTF exit, but maybe not in some cases. Honest Downsides? It is heavy when loaded.  It is strong, but can be damaged if abused.  Frankly, as you will see when you inspect one say the #45, there is really not that much space inside the 2-inch walls of polyurethane construction.  If you buy one, get the Yeti lock up accessory .  Around here a Yeti cooler disappears out of hunter’s trucks as fast as a bag of beef jerky left on the kitchen table at camp.  Like tanning salons or video rental shops, once Yeti exploded on the business scene, many copied products have come out.  Investigate those brands, too.  Cost wise they are all about the same price.  I have yet to ever see Yeti coolers on sale. Conclusion So, are you Yetified yet?  Carrying along some perishable food on a SHTF Bug Out may not seem practical and I fully realize there are issues to deal with.  Still, I think it is a viable option to consider.  In the short haul it gives some welcome fresh food alternatives until you fully dig in.  Then the box can be used for other things.  Good place to store ammunition for example or medical supplies.  Never give up on the options. Concealment Concealed Carry ( Source ) A good holster provides good concealability which gives you an upper hand in self-defense situations. Meanwhile, it also doesn’t offend anyone near you while you move around a public place. Material A holster made up of good material and with a proper fit protects your skin from rashes or bruises and ensures you stay comfortable while you carry your weapon. Kalashnikov USA and Palmetto State Armory to Clash Over AK-103 Clones

If I were Kalashnikov USA, I would be pretty upset about now. Kalashnikov USA recently announced the introduction of a Ak-103 clone under the Kalashnikov banner… and then comes Palmetto State Armory to suprise no one with a budget friendly Ak-103 clone ONE DAY LATER. The difference here is that Palmetto’s version comes in four configurations starting at $599 MSRP  for a basic PSA AK to a $899 Premium version with a folding triangle stock, FN Cold hammer forged barrel, etc… That’s going to smart when the Kalashnikov USA’s AK-103 starts at MSRP $1089. Which will be a better product? That’s a tough call, but PSA has so much manufacturing momentum I think it would be hard for any other company to out-produce or out-price them… even with premium vs premium models. Both setups look pretty damn good, but until they are in shooters hands it will be hard to say which will give you more for your hard-earned dollar. When there is competition, the consumer wins.
